Son of John Tharpe I. Born in 1671. Married Sarah, daughter of Robert Knowles. His children married into the oldest and most prominent settler families: William married Ann, daughter of Richard Haughton; Joseph married Margaret Frost of Westmoreland; John married Ann, daughter of John Harding; Catherine married Philip Haughton; Rebecca married Edward Chambers; Anne married William Grissels and Mary married Michael Petgrave.
John Tharpe senior was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 290 acres of land in St James, 210 acres in Hanover and 387 acres in Westmoreland, total 887 acres.
John Tharp senior, gent., died 17/10/1753 and was buried the following day.
John Tharp of Hanover, planter. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1754. Slave-ownership at probate: 154 of whom 81 were listed as male and 73 as female. 0 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £11690.87 Jamaican currency of which £7545.5 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £2315.72 currency cash, £596.35 currency debts and £63.25 currency plate.
