Biography

Absentee planter. Son of John Jarrett II (1746-1809) and his wife Sarah nee Reid. Born in 1780. His father was the first Jarrett to become a permanent absentee owner, around 1790, when he bought Freemantle Park near Southampton. Married Anne Stephens, only daughter and heir of James Stephens of Camerton, Somerset, 1801. Died in Madeira 31/08/1811. Of Grove Place, Hampshire, and Cavendish Square, London.

Herbert Newton Jarrett junior of Grove Place, Hampshire.

Marriage settlement of 1801 with Ann Stephens involved Kent estate in Trelawny and provided £1,000 per annum for her should I predecease her. In addition to this, £500 per annum for my wife, chargeable on all my estates.

Plantation called Guilsborough and the penn called Spring Garden to my second son Stephen. Appropriate sums to be paid to his guardians for his maintenance and education to age 21.

My son Herbert Newton Jarrett now of Hobland[?] Hall near Great Yarmouth in Suffolk Esquire, my nephew Richard Meyler Esquire, son of Richard Meyler Esquire deceased and my wife to be executors.

All rest and residue to my eldest son John Jarrett.

Codicil from Frenchall, Madeira, dated 06/07/1811. Since my will of 1809 it has been represented to me that one of my plantations namely Silver Grove in Trelawny cannot be advantageously continued many years longer as a sugar estate and that the removal of the negroes thereon to my other plantations would be an improvement of my property, therefore I authorise the trustees and executors to remove the negroes and stock to my other plantations such as shall seem most expendient. The annuity to my wife be increased to £2,000 per annum.
