About MedSIN-RUMS

MedSIN-RUMS stands for Medical Students' International Network, Royal Free and University College Medical School. Last year we were known as MedACT-UCLU, and although we have changed our name our goals and activities remain the same.

Our mission

We are a society of medical students who try to raise awareness among our peers of issues affecting global health which we do not believe are addressed fully in our curriculum. These issues include homelessness, refugees, conflicts, reproductive health, public health and medical education.
We believe we, as future doctors, should be more aware of the these problems and issues, which affect the health of all humanity as a whole. We call this a 'Global Vision'. The medical courses that are taught at the moment do not address these issues well enough, and it is our aim to work as a proactive group to raise awareness and become more active as medical students.

How do we work?

To help increase awareness of the issues we are interested in we aid the dissemination of information and encourage medical students to be more active and to get more involved in these issues. This is carried out by way of our activities, and by our website and email list.

Our activities are divided up into regular seminars, projects and other activities and events...

SEMINARS
Our seminars run every two weeks, and we invite guest speakers to talk about their experience of the issues we are interested in.
Click here for more information about past and future seminars.

PROJECTS
We run several projects, which give our members the opportunity to get more involved on a community, national and international level.
Click here for more information about our projects.

OTHER ACTIVITIES/EVENTS
We have links with a number of other organisations, and are part of MedSIN(UK) and the IFMSA (see later). These organisations hold conferences, meetings and events which we attend.

We are a full constitutional UCL Union affiliated society, and have an account with them. Our paying members are insured by the Union on our activities, and we can also use their subsidised facilities.
We do charge membership fees at MedSIN-RUMS, and this is £3 per year. You will need to be a member if you want to do any of the following...
-Take part in any of our projects (for insurance purposes).
-Get subsidised travel to and tickets for our other activities/events, including coming on minibuses.
-Apply for travel grants for IFMSA projects, workshops or conferences.

Our committee

We are organised by a committee of President, Treasurer, Secretary, Publicity Officer and Seminar Organiser, plus Project Co-ordinators for each of our projects - who also sit on the committee. We have regular meetings, which any active members are invited to attend. The committee intends to be an easily contactable source of information, assistance and guidance for any one who would like to get involved with us.
For the contact details of the committee click here.

Our National links, MedSIN(UK)

MedSIN-RUMS is linked to a network of other similar groups at other medical schools around the UK. We are full members of this network, which is called MedSIN(UK). There are currently 16 full members, and many other unis have small groups of interested students who are trying to set up their own MedSIN group.
MedSIN(UK) conduct some activities as a whole, but in the main they are there to aid the flow of information and ideas around the network of MedSIN groups to carry out our common goals. MedSIN(UK) also represent the UK in the IFMSA (see next heading). The main aim of MedSIN(UK) as a group is to facilitate the activities of the individual groups through exchange of ideas and information.
There are two National Meetings every year. There was one recently in Sheffield on the 30th October, to which 9 of us went. For a report of the weekend click here.

Our International links, the IFMSA

MedSIN-UK is the National Member Organisation of a huge international organisation called the IFMSA. The International Federation of Medical Students' Associations has been around since 1951. It is well established in over 60 countries all over the world, and has 42 full member nations, including the UK. It is officially recognised by the UN and WHO as a non-political, non-governmental organisation, and there are many links and collaborations with these organisations and other large international organisations.
The idealism in the IFMSA is much the same as our own, and seeing the activities which our colleagues around the world are involved in is fascinating and inspiring. Many of our members have travelled abroad on IFMSA projects and to their meetings, conferences and workshops all over the world, for example Mexico, Romania and Calcutta.
At MedSIN-RUMS we very much like to encourage the 'Global Vision' which the IFMSA exists to provide among medical students. We have a list of the details of all IFMSA projects and activities, and access to information from past projects and activities. We have a scheme where our members can apply to us for £50 travel grants to travel to IFMSA projects and MedSIN-UK activities. We can also recommend you to other sources of sponsorship at UCL. For information on how to apply, email us on medsin-rums@ucl.ac.uk.
